In the Leeway
In the Leeway is a study of introspection and the expansion of thought that comes with time spent alone. The images are self-portraits, altered to imply the intersection of the external and the internal, providing a glimpse of what poet Jenny Xie calls “the borderless empire of the interior.”
I see a parallel between the freedom to think without interruption and the improvisational nature of the collage process. Layering my images with scanned watercolour or other elements gives me permission to stray, to go off course: what begins as one image quickly becomes another. In the meditative space of these experiments, I find myself at ease, constrained only by the need to create unity.
